Engage Counts in Mt. Pleasant at The Convention
-
The Convention, held at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort on October 5-7, drew over 1,100 real estate professionals (175 first time attendees) and was true to its tagline – engagement counts. The Convention began with a laugh, featuring business humorist Greg Schwem at the Grand Assembly. In addition to the many CE Marketplace Certified knowledge session offerings, Dr. Paul Bishop of the National Association of Realtors® gave an economic forecast during the Grand Gathering.

Jason Copeman of the Upper Peninsula Association of Realtors® was sworn in as 2017 Michigan Realtors® President. Gene Szpeinski of the Grand Rapids Association of Realtors® was named the 2016 Michigan Realtor® of the Year. Beth Foley of the West Michigan Lakeshore Association of Realtors® was named the 2016 Realtor® Active in Politics. Thank you to all of our speakers, attendees, volunteers and sponsors for making this an engaging event. In addition to the excitement of the sold out expo hall, the live and silent auctions brought in over $22,000 for RPAC! We would also like to congratulate the 14 members of the Michigan Realtors® Leadership Academy Class of 2016, who graduated during the Grand Assembly. Applications for the 2017 Leadership Academy are being accepted between now and November 20, 2016.

2017 LQC Placemaking Micro Grants Available – Apply Today
-
The Michigan Realtors® is now accepting applications for 2017 Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper micro grants. 8 grants were awarded in 2016 and the Michigan Realtors® is excited to continue the program. LQC placemaking projects are small, inexpensive, and incremental community projects. They do not need to cost a lot of money to get off the ground. Nor do they need to take a lot of time to plan and complete. But, these smaller types of placemaking activities can often help to improve a neighborhood and make it a better place to live, work and play.

Legal Lines – Question of the Month
-
With the help of McClelland & Anderson, we are taking the most recently asked questions from our legal hotline and putting them in E-news. We will be featuring a different question each issue.

QUESTION:

The purchase agreement provides that the seller shall surrender possession of the home on August 1st at 12:00 a.m. Is the seller entitled to possession for the entire day on August 1st?

ANSWER:

While the weight of authority seems to be that 12:00 a.m. (or midnight) marks the start of the new day, this understanding is by no means uniform. For this reason, to avoid confusion, Realtors® are encouraged to avoid using this deadline in contracts and instead use 11:59 p.m. or 12:01 a.m.
