Your volunteer leadership is doing a lot of work behind the scenes at OAR these days on behalf of you and property owners throughout the State. The Government Affairs Key Committee and OAR staff are reading through bills and gearing up to lobby for and against potential legislation that will impact not only your business, but the private property rights of every Oregonian.


This is year it is vitally important that we make a strong REALTOR® presence in Salem to stand up for private property rights and our industry. That is why I am personally encourage each of you to join us at the biannual REALTOR® Day at the Capitol on April 12th in Salem.

We, as REALTORS®, must show that we care about our business and will show up to make a difference. Ask your local Board/Association to see if there will be a bus going to Salem from your area, carpool with colleagues, or drive in yourself…just don’t miss REALTOR® Day. Recovery, Expansion, Hypersupply, and Recession

Historically, Oregon’s economy lags behind the broader national economic cycle - for housing, that lag is apparent. A 2016 study from Josh Lehner (Oregon Office of Economic Analysis) illustrates Oregon is currently underbuilt by 24,000 units. In other words, we need to build 24,000 units just to equalize the supply / demand curve.

Until we reach a period of hypersupply, Oregonians will continue to feel the pinch of the real estate supply / demand curve. Without a silver bullet, the best strategies are to soften the blow and ease negative aspects for each real estate cycle. This was the strategy OAR perused as part of a coalition during the 2016 Legislative Session. 


Unfortunately, the remaining policy choices to help bend the curve down are exceptionally blunt instruments. And, in practice, often compound the problems rather than provide relief. Here are a few of those blunt instruments that we’re tracking on behalf of our membership

  • HB 2001: Allows rent control to be adopted at the city of county level and generally caps increases greater than 5%.

  • HB 2004: Requires moving expenses to be paid by a landlord for no-cause eviction.

  • HB 2006: Caps the mortgage interest deduction and increases taxes on the majority of home owners in Oregon.

NAR is seeking nominations for the Good Neighbor Awards, which recognize REALTORS® who make a difference in their communities through volunteer work. Winners will get national publicity and $10,000 in grant money to help a nonprofit of their choice – and will be recognized at the REALTORS® Conference & Expo in Chicago this November.
