IAR Releases Monthly Markets Report –
July Home Sales Increase by 22.8 Percent Statewide,
Home Prices and Pending Home Sales Also Up Year-Over-Year
The number of existing, single-family homes sold last month statewide increased 22.8 percent when compared with July 2012; the median sale price of homes increased 5.7 percent and the number of pending home sales increased 12.2 percent. This is according to the monthly Indiana Real Estate Markets Report last week released by IAR.
"Housing continues to lead the overall economic recovery," said Kevin Kirkpatrick, 2013 President of the Indiana Association of REALTORS®, in a press release. "And it should for the near future given the fact that buyers still have low interest rates on their side and sellers have high demand on their side."
Read the full monthly report and see county-level housing data under the Resources tab of IndianaRealtors.com. As a reminder, the county one-pagers are for members to use as they will - include in a listing presentation, reference in a blog post, paste into an e-newsletter to clients, etc.
The next report is due out September 23.
Technology to Be a Main Focus of Conference –
Day and Session Passes Allow Members to Attend Only What They Want
Meet Jason Pantana of Village Real Estate Services in Nashville, Tennessee – Inman News’ “Most Innovative Brokerage” for 2012. Jason will lead two technology sessions during the annual IAR conference – “The Klout Spout: Turn On Your Social Influence” and “The Receptor Effect: Keeping Up With the Digital Consumer”. Both sessions will take place on Tuesday, September 17. And, both sessions offer elective continuing education and/or Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI) designation credit hours.
Also included in the technology offerings of conference is a BarCamp on Thursday, September 19. What is a BarCamp? A Real Estate (RE) BarCamp is a one-day social media marketing and technology “un-conference” for professionals in the industry. BarCamps are free of cost and structure, designed to facilitate conversations and demonstrations among participants on how to grow their business through social media and other technologies. They’re high energy and usually well-attended. The last BarCamp IAR helped organize – RE BarCamp Indiana – drew hundreds from around the state, and not just REALTORS®, but lenders, builders, title agents and home improvement experts, too..
Register for one or both of Jason’s sessions and/or BarCamp here.

Do Not Pay the Patent
Enforcement Actions Put on Hold,
Inform IAR Attorneys of Letters Received
A patent troll is a patent owner who doesn’t use the patent
it owns, but simply seeks to extract license fees or litigation settlements.
Indiana was known a few months back for receiving the first threatened lawsuit
of this type against a real estate company.
Shortly thereafter, real estate offices around the country
received letters from companies called AllLed, AdzPro, GanPan, among others,
claiming to have the exclusive right to send documents via e-mail from a copier
machine, and demanding that you pay a licensing fee of $900 to $1,200 per
employee before you can send a document. Read more»

IAR Board of Directors Election Set
for September 24-29, 2013,
Update Email Address in NRDS by September 14 to Receive Ballot
“Every election is determined by the people who show up.” --
Larry J. Sabato, Director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics
The election to fill vacancies on the IAR Board of Directors
will be here soon. In this case, you needn’t physically show up anywhere to
have your say. All you have to do is click on a link in an email. Please mark
your calendar for September 24 and watch your inbox – junk and spam folders,
too – for the electronic ballot. Every IAR member may vote once between then
and September 29.
If you received today’s Indiana
REALTOR® Advocate, you should receive an electronic ballot without issue.
But, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Please check the
National REALTOR® Database System on or before September 14 to be sure the
correct email address is included in your NRDS record. And, please
encourage fellow IAR members to do the same.
See here for the list of candidates the Election
Qualification Committee has approved to stand for election.

REALTOR® Magazine Recognizes Her United
Names Helman One of 10 Good Neighbor
The National Association of REALTORS® this week recognized
10 members from around the country as finalists for REALTOR® Magazine’s 2013
Good Neighbor Awards.
This year marks the 14th year the Good Neighbor Awards
program has recognized REALTORS® who improve the quality of life in their
communities through volunteer work. The REALTORS® acknowledged by this program
over the years donate their time, money and passion to create a positive impact
on others and address critical needs in their community.
From NAR's press release:
“For 18 years, Bernice Helman has served the United Way of the Wabash
Valley, an organization dedicated to achieving community-wide change by
improving the education, income and health of its residents. Her community was
dealt a hard blow when a large pharmaceutical company left, taking with it jobs
and hundreds of thousands of dollars in corporate donations. Helman overcame
the challenge through her tireless efforts, which included reaching out to
solicit donations from rural counties that typically had only received
donations, resulting in the United Way surpassing its fundraising goal of $1.8
million last year.”
This October five winners will be selected from among the 10
finalists to receive national media exposure and a $10,000 grant for their
community cause. Winners will also receive travel expenses to the 2013
REALTORS® Conference & Expo in San Francisco, where they will accept their awards
at a presentation in front of thousands of their peers. The five honorable
mentions will receive a $2,500 grant. The winners will be featured in the
November/December issue of REALTOR® Magazine.
Congratulations and best wishes to Bernice!
