INDUSTRY EVENTS

June 20, 2014

The June solstice is tomorrow, offering those of us who live north of The Equator the longest hours of daylight all year. It’s also a Saturday, but the RECP staff will be in the office from 9am-Noon to accept last minute course registrations and answer questions about the upcoming license law transition deadline. Take advantage of this special opportunity by calling 1-800-742-4067. IAR does not want members “left in the dark” come July 1 and unable to practice real estate.

Mark Porter to Lead Designation Days Event

The dynamic Mark Porter will bring his 23 years of experience as a real estate broker, investor, and consultant to Indiana for three full days this fall when he leads the biannual IAR-RECP REALTOR® Professional Designation Days event scheduled for October 21-23 at Indiana Wesleyan University’s Indianapolis-North campus. Learn about planning, systems, and technology as you earn credit toward the prestigious Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI) and Certified Residential Specialist® (CRS®) designations. Mark’s courses foster time saving and income producing habits, are taught in a fun and engaging environment, and qualify for elective continuing education hours. Register at RECP.org for the three-day package. Call RECP at 1-800-742-4067 with questions or to register for a shorter experience.

Sign Up for Post-July 1 Education Info

After July 1, the first step for anyone wanting to start a real estate career in Indiana is to successfully complete a 90 hour pre-licensing Broker course. RECP plans to offer this course in both live and online/on-demand formats. However, the Indiana Real Estate Commission does not plan to set the curriculum until mid-July, so RECP is unable to publish additional course details -- required materials, locations, cost, etc. -- until the IREC takes action. Sign up here to be among the first notified when the new pre-licensing Broker course is available. Send questions to course@recp.org.

Also after July 1, all real estate licensees are on the same three year license renewal cycle with the same continuing education requirement of 12 hours per year. The curriculum will vary by license type, which will not be set by the IREC until mid-July. Sign up here to be among the first notified when the new CE packages are available from RECP.

Help RPAC Sizzle this Summer

Summertime conjures images of BBQs, golf outings, relaxing by the water, festivals, and fairs. Many members are also gearing up for some great RPAC fundraising events. Watch for an invitation to the events in your area and join the efforts of your local REALTOR® board/association. We’ve currently collected $85,000 from 12% of the membership statewide. See how your local is progressing toward the October deadline here and watch those numbers sizzle -- with your help -- throughout the summer months. Need fundraising assistance? IAR’s Eric Augustus is happy and ready to help; email him today. As a reminder, all REALTOR® Political Action Committee contributions support pro-member candidates.

Coming Soon Listings Raise Legal and Ethical Flags

Is this limited marketing in the client's best interest? Is it legal? Is it ethical? Does it comply with your listing service's rules? Watch this, one of the first videos in the monthly IAR-RECP series, to hear what IAR's General Counsel had to say back in December about coming soon listings and all other types of pocket listings.

A pocket listing is one not entered into the listing service. Done for a number of reasons and handled in a few different ways, pocket listings raise legal and ethical flags about which all members need to be aware.

Monthly Hotline Q&As:  Procuring Cause

Commission disputes boil down to what is referred to in the industry as "procuring cause". The agent who ultimately caused the buyer to purchase the home and earned the commission is generally the procuring cause agent. In this month’s column, IAR Senior Staff Counsel Kelly Shonborn answers some frequently asked questions about procuring cause.

Principal and Managing Broker members as well as their designated agents can contact the Legal Hotline by phone at 317.913.3254 or 800.444.5472 toll free; by online form; or by fax at 317.842.8494.
