Volume 6, Issue 2: January 18, 2013
Gail Renulfi, DAR President
Thanks to all the members who attended my DAR installation last month. As we launch 2013, it is an honor to serve as your DAR President. I firmly believe in the power of our Association as both a public resource and an engine for effective advocacy in Delaware. I have had the pleasure of working with those volunteers who are serving in our leadership at all levels and they are all highly organized and believe in our association.
My promise to you is that I will continually strive to uphold the values and policies that have brought us to this level. I know the importance of credibility and fair play. The strongest measure of professionalism in our industry is not just calling ourselves REALTORS®, but living up to that charge every day and in every transaction.
In my many years of experience in this industry, I have witnessed DAR’s steady improvement in defining what an association should be for its membership. I have also witnessed the power of that collective membership’s voice when we have needed you at Legislative Hall. We have distinguished ourselves in the public policy arena by supporting those candidates that have stood up for REALTORS® in the legislative process.
Through our grassroots communication, advocacy and bipartisan decisions made by our volunteers, we have unified efforts of REALTORS® across the state. Whether participating in candidate interviews, attending Mid Year Hill visits or meeting elsewhere with elected officials on specific policy initiatives, the REALTOR® party gains respect. We are a formidable political force when we join together to help our clients and customers.
This year we will be facing many new challenges. With the elections behind us, we will be working closely with our newly elected Senators and Representatives to educate and reinforce the importance of our association in advocating sound policy and promoting public awareness for our issues. The 147th General Assembly began this week and we will be monitoring closely all legislation that may harm our profession. Please make sure you read the DAR Government Affairs Update to stay informed on our issues.
If you are not yet involved in our association, it is time for you to think about getting involved. Staying involved keeps us one step ahead when it comes to effecting meaningful change across our state and in our local communities. I hope I can count of all of you to invest in your business by investing in RPAC. That is one way of helping the association help those who believe in our ideals.
Please join me in celebrating NAR’s 100th anniversary of the Code of Ethics in 2013! I would like to take just a second and quote the Preamble of the Code of Ethics; it starts by saying “Under all is the Land” and grew over the years as the foundation of our business. Can you imagine in 1913 how this set us apart as people came to the United States to find the American Dream?
In closing, I would again like to thank the members for the opportunity to serve as your DAR President and I look forward to working with leadership and our members to help keep any legislation and/or regulation from harming our industry. I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year!
2013 DAR President

Federal News In Case You Missed It:
A Statement From NAR On The CFPB's New Qualified Mortgage Rule:
"The National Association of Realtors® applauds the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for creating a broadly defined Qualified Mortgage rule that establishes strong consumer protections while ensuring continued access to safe, affordable mortgage credit. NAR forged a coalition of partners that urged regulators to honor Congressional intent by crafting a broad QM and we are pleased that the rule encompasses the vast majority of the safe, high quality lending being done today. We will continue to work closely with the CFPB to ensure that the cap on fees doesn't restrict consumers' mortgage options, but believe today's QM rule is a positive step to bringing certainty to the housing finance system. Realtors® urge regulators to mirror the forthcoming Qualified Residential Mortgage rule after the QM rule to ensure affordable credit remains available to qualified borrowers." - National Association of Realtors President Gary Thomas
