REALTOR® Seller Financing Bill Moves Unanimously Through the House

On Monday, April 8, 2013, the House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 2856-A (of the members that were present).  This bill was introduced on behalf of the Oregon Association of REALTORS® and provides a useful tool for potential homeowners to achieve the dream of homeownership when credit is tight.  The advancing of this important legislation will provide yet another positive step forward in the revival of the housing market.

Deadlines Hit

Two important deadlines have come and gone in the 77th Oregon Legislature.  As of April 8th, 2013, any piece of legislation that had not been scheduled for a work session by the legislative committees is deemed dead.  Additionally, any legislation that was not given a work session with subsequent movement was deemed dead.  These deadlines hold true unless the legislation is currently in a Revenue, Ways & Means, or Rules Committee. What this means for REALTORS® ›

Client Service and Identifying Sex Offenders

Q: I thought I heard that if we knew about a sex offender in the area, although we are not required by law to inform our buyers, we should since we are representing them and their needs.  Brokers are being told not to provide any information on sex offenders even if we know it, but to always refer our clients to a website that identifies sex offenders in the area.  Although we would refer our clients to that website, we all find it troublesome not to share information we know that may affect our clients.  What should we do in this situation?

April is Fair Housing Month

And this year is the 45th anniversary of the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act.  This landmark legislation prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status or disability.

Fair Housing2013 also marks the centennial of the REALTORS® Code of Ethics and the comprehensive protections it provides to consumers.  This includes Article 10, which reads, in part:  “REALTORS® shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons or race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, or sexual orientation."

Every April, people across the country are encouraged to learn more about their rights and responsibilities under the Act as a part of National Fair Housing Month.

REALTORS® who adapt to increasing cultural diversity in the market and can meet the needs of diverse clients gain a competitive edge and expand opportunities.
