Looming on the horizon is a budget crisis that will likely jeopardize one of Oregon’s best programs for homeownership and economic development: the Oregon Mortgage Interest Deduction. Budgeting is an effective way to prioritize spending and save for goals. Just like many Oregon families do, the State of Oregon sets its budget every other year based on expected tax revenues. And just like with family budgeting, occasional unexpected costs occur and the state has ways to deal with those problems. However, one way our state budget differs from family budgets is that it lacks firm abilities to set aside funds for increasing or new costs when those costs are more than two years out. READ MORE »

Oregon In-Migration: Good or Bad?

Off the Grid Homesteading

You may have seen or heard recent reports from Oregon state economists touting recent in-migration to the “Timber Belt” and Oregon, specifically, and the benefits it has on our state’s economy. This isn’t a neutral topic from a real estate perspective! On the plus side, people keep moving in at a pace just as strong as the migration to urban centers such as Portland. The new residents of rural Oregon bring a lifetime of experience and wealth, often in the form of California home equity. However, that can seem to be a real problem in low inventory markets, such as Portland, where some disgruntled citizens have taken matters into their own hands by stickering for sale signs with “No Californians”. What do you think about the state of our population flux and real estate industry? SOUND OFF »
