Advocacy By and For You

Political and legal advocacy are the top initiatives of the Oregon Association of REALTORS®. Our priority is to protect and promote private property rights. This year, the Oregon legislature held a short session and a tremendous amount of work was done on your behalf as well as for property owners throughout the state. Your Government Affairs Key Committee, led by volunteer leader Vicki Breese-Iverson and OAR Government Affairs Director Shawn Cleave, spent long and grueling hours reading bills and lobbying for and against potential legislation that impacts not only your business but the private property rights of every Oregonian. My personal thank you to that awesome group for their hard work on behalf of every member. Read a more detailed session summary here »

Our work is not done, however. This is an election year and supporting and electing REALTOR®-friendly candidates is a priority and will require each and every one of us to do our part. So I am personally asking you to engage locally with your candidates, vote, and consider becoming a Major Investor in RPAC. It’s a $1,000 total annual investment which can be broken up into $300 down and the balance in equal monthly installments. If you have any questions about becoming a Major Investor, please feel free to contact me directly. My personal cell is 541-331-1209.

Other important political initiatives are the “Calls for Action” and “Broker Involvement” programs. If you are not receiving legislative calls to action to defeat onerous legislation or to promote positive legislation, ask your Principal Broker if they are in the Broker Involvement Program through NAR. If they are not, please encourage them to sign up. It's good for your business!

Advocating in Eastern Oregon: the Owyhee National Monument Issue

This week, the Oregon Association of REALTORS® stood with families and businesses in Malheur County as they announced a campaign to oppose the declaration of a 2.5 million acre national monument in Eastern Oregon. The Owyhee Basin Stewardship Coalition launched a new website – www.ourlandourvoice.com – and a fundraising campaign to ensure local communities are included in the future of the Owyhee Canyonlands and that Congress, community leaders, and the stewards of the land have their voices heard before a new national monument is created. Our members in Eastern Oregon know this monument would hurt the local economy and harm families who have cared for the land for generations.

Our Land Our Voice

A recent advisory vote in Malheur County shows citizens are soundly against a proposed monument designation. Ninety percent of those casting ballots said they did not want to see a national monument created at the Oregon-Idaho-Nevada border. And a new statewide survey of Oregon voters shows 61% believe the area being considered already has enough federal protection.

The survey also shows 73% of registered Oregon voters believe monuments should only be created by a vote of Congress and not by executive order. The Association contributed $50,000 towards the coalition’s goal of raising $500,000 to fight the monument designation. You can help support this important effort and our members in Eastern Oregon by signing the petition at www.ourlandourvoice.com.

Is the Golden Handoff the New Golden Parachute?

The Golden Handoff

An Oregon REALTOR® just solved the retirement puzzle in real estate and it’s so easy you won’t believe it! Did you know that the average REALTOR® is approaching 60 years of age? It’s no wonder the idea of retirement and exit strategies are a hot topic these days. Unfortunately for most agents the last listing or contract they write will be their last paycheck – when most agents retire they simply close up shop and walk away.

Great client relationships are worth a fortune in the real estate business. But when agents retire, most of those fortunes are simply lost—until now. The Golden Handoff, a new book by Portland REALTOR® and author Nick Krautter, solves this problem. READ MORE »

NAR Survey: Single-family Homes Needed

A majority of both homeowners and renters would purchase a suburban single-family home if they were to buy in the next six months, according to the second installment of NAR's new Housing Opportunities and Market Experience (HOME) survey, released March 15. The survey also found that confidence about now being a good time to buy is waning amongst renters, particularly in the West – where prices have solidly risen. READ MORE »

Oregon Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Laws for REALTORS®

Carbon Monoxide Alarm Laws

The Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has provided training and technical assistance to real estate agents, property managers, and home inspectors on Oregon’s smoke alarm law for more than 20 years, and on the newer carbon monoxide (CO) alarm law for the past six years.

The Oregon Real Estate Board recently approved the OSFM as a continuing education provider for real estate agents on smoke and CO alarm law courses. The OSFM is currently updating the training: Oregon requirements for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in a real estate transaction. We are seeking real estate agent feedback to help improve the training. Please take a few moments to complete our anonymous online survey.

For more information about the program, contact Stephanie Stafford, Fire Prevention Coordinator, at 503-934-8219 or stephanie.stafford@state.or.us. For general questions on smoke and carbon monoxide alarm laws, contact 503-934-8228 or osfm.ce@state.or.us or visit www.oregon.gov/osp/sfm/.
