National Volunteer Week

Today marks the end of National Volunteer Week and I’ve been thinking a lot about how thankful I am for everyone who takes time out of their business to work on behalf of all Oregon REALTORS®. Please watch this short video greeting I recorded last week when I was at the OAR office to express my appreciation for our countless volunteers who really make the association what it is. PUBLIC POLICY

Legislative Conference – Monday May 23

4.1 Kate Brown signs Housing Package - Eva Sanders in attand

On Friday, April 1, Governor Kate Brown signed the housing bill package that we worked so hard to shepherd through the legislature this session. Representatives from the coalition of industry partners and advocates were on hand to witness the occasion.

If you’re passionate about legislative issues and the laws that govern your day-to-day business, come to the Salem Convention Center on Monday, May 23 to join our Legislative Conference. In an afternoon (with a working lunch) you can add your voice to the topics of discussion* such as Agency license fee increase, property tax reform, and property disclosure requirements. Help us set the agenda for the 2017 Legislative Session! READ MORE & REGISTER ONLINE »

*If you have an issue related to Oregon’s real estate industry that you would like to have included in this conference, please contact OAR Government Affairs Director Shawn Cleave by Weds. 4/20 at scleave@oregonrealtors.org using the subject line “Issue for Legislative Conference. All submitted issues will be reviewed by the Government Affairs Key Committee for final inclusion. We will include most submissions. However, all submissions will be evaluated based on the statewide impact of the issue and whether the state legislature or executive branch is the correct venue and will then be prioritized based on the time available for the meeting.

WARNING: Mortgage Email Phishing Scam

Scam Alert

The success hackers have had in infiltrating real estate transactions to siphon off money into illegal accounts has prompted the Federal Trade Commission and NAR to post a warning on the FTC website. The latest Voice for Real Estate news video looks at how scammers phish for key information and then exploit it to rob home buyers.

On March 18th, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Consumer Blog issued a post focused on hackers who have been breaking into some consumers' and real estate professionals' email accounts to get information about upcoming real estate transactions.

After figuring out the closing dates, hackers send an email to the buyer, posing as the real estate professional or title company. The bogus email says there has been a last minute change to the wiring instructions, and tells the buyer to wire closing costs to a different account. But it's the scammer's account. If the buyer takes the bait, their bank account could be cleared out in a matter of minutes. Often, that's money the buyer will never see again. Read the blog post here.

Flood Insurance Changes as of April 1

Flood Insurance Program

On April 1, 2016 a number of changes went into effect as part of the 2014 Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act. This legislation fixed a great many of the problems from the 2012 Biggert Waters legislation such as the sharp and near immediate increase in flood insurance rates. The changes that took place this month are a part of the gradual implementation of new and unsubsidized rates. This notice from FEMA lays out the changes and has links for more information.  Also, here is the realtor.org link to the "toolkit" with a suite of links and definitions.

New DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) Toolkit

DMCA Toolkit Logo

Do you really know who owns the pictures you're using to showcase your listing? The new DMCA Toolkit is your guide to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act – an act designed to, among other things, heighten the penalty for copyright infringement on the internet. We’ve put together this helpful guide to protect you from copyright infringement liability. It includes sample language and forms and is designed to inform you about the dangers of using third-party images, or images you find on the internet, on your own website without proper permissions.  It also includes steps you can take to ensure your website falls under the “Safe Harbor” provisions of the act. You can also view the the latest Window to the Law video from NAR Legal Affairs which explains how a provision in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can protect MLSs, subscribers and participants from copyright infringement liability while hosting an IDX display.
