PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Debra Gisriel

If Real Estate Is Your Job, Then Politics Is Your Business

If you are in real estate, you are in politics! Those words were never so true as they are today. As REALTORS®, our number one advocacy priority is to protect private property rights. Last week, the leadership of OAR traipsed the halls of Congress to deliver that message to our entire Congressional delegation from Oregon. Every member of our delegation was open to and agreed with our issues related to housing.

The Mid-Year Legislative meetings in Washington DC are held every year in May when REALTOR® leaders from all the world converge on DC…and Capitol Hill certainly takes notice! There are many ways for you to get involved in REALTOR® politics and I encourage you to check out the REALTOR® Party information at Realtor.org or call me anytime. I also want to give some personal congratulations to Mark Meek for his victory in the primary for the Oregon House of Representatives!

REALTOR® or Real Estate Agent: There's a Difference...Somehow!

Phil Dunphey Modern Family

Did you catch the May 4 episode of Modern Family in which the character Phil Dunphy schools viewers on the difference between a REALTOR® and a licensee? It’s a must see! Continuing the partnership with Modern Family, NAR has commissioned a series of :30 commercials that will run on various cable and network stations. The videos feature Dunphy, portrayed by Ty Burrell, sitting beside a fireplace, espousing real estate-themed "Phil's-osophies" which speak to the importance of using a REALTOR® when buying or selling a home. Check out the two videos that are now airing here and stay tuned for more funny from Phil in the coming months.

Flood Insurance Improvement Gains

Flood Insurance Program

House lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a bill encouraging the development of a private flood insurance market by making it easier for home owners in flood zones to switch back and forth between private and public insurance programs. NAR is encouraging Senators to pass the same bill. The effort is a top story in the May 2 Voice for Real Estate news video, which also looks at the spring selling season and a new warning about email scares in real estate. Watch video (start at 1:30 for flood insurance segment).

New Rule on Closing Changes in Works

CFPB

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau plans to publish a proposed rule on the closing process changes that took effect last year in October. NAR has asked the agency for rulemaking to clarify lingering questions on the closing changes, which the CFPB has made part of its Know Before You Owe campaign.

Old-School Print Advertising Not Dead…If You Do It Right!

Print Ad Done Right

When it comes to print media, you're probably envisioning the traditional ad with images of four to six houses you're currently listing. Can you say "boring"? This is what 99 percent of brokers and agents do. It's also the reason most potential clients aren't going to call you and say, "I love your ad. Can you come over for an interview?" READ MORE »
