PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Debra Gisriel

Real estate is a profession!

Are you a professional? Our profession has recently come under scrutiny for our lack of professionalism, and I personally find that unacceptable and want to reach out to every single member of our Association and set forth the challenge to change that perception of our industry. The recent published report by NAR, the D.A.N.G.E.R report, clearly states that the biggest danger facing our industry is ourselves - lack of experience, education, and unethical behavior.

As your 2016 OAR President, one of my top priorities is professional development. The OAR educational compenent of professional development has made tremendous strides by offering timely and relevant education classes both live and through webinars. Our new and improved GRI program is accessible, relevant, and expanding all over the state, thanks to the hard work and passion of the OAR Professional Development Committee and OAR staff. But we still have lots of work to do collectively as an industry to raise that bar of professionalism. A few basic things that we as individual REALTORS® can do to raise that bar are:

  • Know and abide by the Code of Ethics;

  • Adhere to the “Golden Rule”;

  • Always put your clients' interests first;

  • Have a professional demeanor and appearance at all times;

  • Communicate clearly and timely; and

  • Always treat your fellow REALTORS® with respect.

We are all in this together. So in our own best interest, the best interest of our clients, and
the best interest of the public, I encourage each of us to “RAISE THE BAR”.

Help First-Time Homebuyers – Tell the U.S. Senate to Act!

More Condos and Rural Housing Opportunities On-The-Line!

As Oregon’s housing crisis plays out, the United States Senate is missing an opportunity to improve housing markets across the country, and we need your help to tell them to get to work and make homeownership a priority!

Take action now to urge your Senators to pass H.R. 3700, the “Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act of 2016” - a bill that makes needed reforms to the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) condominium loan program, federal-assisted housing programs, and Rural Housing Service loan programs.

call for action

H.R. 3700 is a big deal for first time home buyers, low-income, rural Oregonians, and people looking to purchase a condo in the city as well. The House of Representatives passed the bill unanimously (if you can believe it, 427-0) and it has been sitting in the Senate for some time. It's time to move the bill! Here’s how you can help!

  1. Take action now by telling our Senators to advocate for passage of the bill in the Senate. It only takes two clicks.

  2. Share our post on Facebook with your social networks. Let your friends and clients know that Oregon REALTORS® are working for their future housing opportunities.

If you want to be the first to respond to a Call for Action (CFA), remember to sign up on the REALTOR® Action Center. Get notifications by text if you like. It’s simple, fast and effective! Our goal is to hit 20-percent of our membership responding to the CFA. We did it last time; let’s do it again!

Election Results

The RPAC Trustees invested and guided many strategic campaigns for the May 17 Oregon primary election. By volume, the majority of our election campaigns were designed to assist incumbent REALTOR® Champions achieve the nomination of the Oregon Independent Party.

On Monday, June 13, the results of the hand-counted ballots were finally received by Oregon’s Secretary of State. All of the candidates we financially supported for this effort where successful! Congratulations to:

  • Rep. John Huffman (HD 59 – The Dalles)

  • Rep. Knute Buehler (HD 54 – Bend)

  • Rep. Mark Johnson (HD 52 – Hood River)

  • Rep. John Lively (HD 12 – Springfield)

  • Rep. Andy Olson (HD 15 – Albany)

  • Rep. Jodi Hack (19 – Salem)

Our Land. Our Voice: Owyhee Canyon Lands Update

In March, the Oregon Association of REALTORS® joined in opposition to the designation of the Owyhee Canyon Lands as a national monument without local input and a vote of Congress.

Through an application from the Four Rivers Association, we provided $50,000 to the opposition campaign from the OAR Issues Mobilization Fund. This seed money helped leverage additional resources from the area with a target budget of over $300,000.

During the National Association of REALTORS® Legislative Meetings in D.C. last month, our Oregon REALTORS® were able to express our concerns over the process and economic harm that would occur in Eastern Oregon if President Obama signs an executive order, unilaterally designating the area with a stroke of a pen, as he exits the office at the end of the year.

REALTOR® leadership on this issue resulted in an invitation to Representative Clem’s Committee on Rural Communities, Land Use and Water. President-Elect George Grabenhorst testified on our behalf regarding our position.

To join the coalition in opposition please visit Our Land. Our Voice. and sign the petition.
