Appraisal Crisis

I do not use the word crisis lightly and I am not an alarmist, but what I am hearing from brokers, lenders, and appraisers from around the state concerns me and it must be addressed. Brokers are telling me that some rural area appraisals are as much as three to four months out and average time frames on most appraisals is about six weeks and often as much as eight weeks. These lengthy time frames are onerous to our buyers and sellers as well. So what is the problem? READ MORE »

Hard Choices, Unfunded Liabilities: PERS & Oregon’s Housing Market – Yes, it’s all connected.

While politics can be an ugly process, there are some issues we just can’t ignore when it comes to our industry and our clients’ lives. Measure 97 this November is one such issue. The State’s inability to address our unfunded liabilities (read: budget deficit) has created an enormous budgetary problem – a $22 Billion problem, to be precise. As such, the investment Oregon makes to lower the cost of owning a home in Oregon, contributing to 16.2% of Oregon’s economy, is a primary target for more tax dollars. READ MORE »

Wire Fraud Notice Template Available

Wire Fraud

As you’re probably aware, there has been an increase in wire fraud issues, especially as they relate to escrow and earnest and purchase monies. For your immediate use, NAR has created a notice template you can add to your email signature regarding ways to avoid email wire fraud. This both alerts your clients to the issue and serves as a risk-reduction tool for you. However, this notice should not serve as a substitute for educating your clients and other participants in your real estate transactions about email wire fraud. To that end, we are considering adding a section on this topic to the Buyers and Sellers Advisories as well.

DocuSign Fraud

Fraud Alert

Along the lines of wire fraud, there have been reports of some fraud involving hacking into DocuSign accounts. What apparently has happened is that fraudsters have hacked into a REALTOR®’s account (it is not clear whether it is the REALTOR®’s e-mail account or their account at DocuSign, or both) and generated a fake e-mail to escrow alerting the escrow officer to the presence of a new document for a closing. The e-mail appears similar to any other DocuSign e-mail alert except when one clicks on the link to the document, instead of opening the document, a copy of the DocuSign web page appears asking the user to enter in their DocuSign account username and password. If this information is supplied, you have just granted access to the bad guys. In order to protect yourself and your clients, refer to this Top 10 List of tips to spot fraudulent emails and web sites by looking for signs including fake links, attachments, deceptive URLs, and more. Feel free to share with your clients. The list was provided by the legal counsel for a large title company who has dealt with this issue. READ MORE »

Safety is Always in Season

REALTOR Safety Program

The end of summer is (sadly) almost here but busy season is still in full swing. That means many more showings, more open houses, and more meetings with clients. Now is a good time to remember to always keep safety in mind. The REALTOR® Safety Program provides safety resources and discounts for resources from the program’s featured safety providers. One of those resources is the award winning video “Real Estate, Safety & You” in which consumers learn about the potential safety protocols they may encounter when working with a REALTOR®. It’s a great resource to share with clients to educate them about the importance of REALTOR® safety.

$1 Million awarded in HOME Foundation grants

A very popular event again this year (selling out in record time!), the full slate of golfers took to the links on a gorgeous Portland summer day to raise money for your non-profit which gives grants to organizations working on affordable housing issues in your communities.
