No on Measure 97

Now more than ever, it is critical for Oregon REALTORS® to come together and speak with one voice for a sound and dynamic real estate market. At the local, state and national levels, our elected officials are making decisions that have a huge impact on REALTORS® and our customers. We support candidates regardless of political party affiliation. We are The REALTOR® Party, a powerful alliance of REALTORS® and REALTOR® Associations working to protect and promote homeownership and property investment. The REALTOR® Party speaks with one voice to advance candidates and public policies that build strong communities and promote a vibrant business environment. My personal message to you as members of OAR is to make sure you exercise your right, and VOTE! I’d also like to invite you to take a look at our 2016 OAR VOTER GUIDE »

Why We Oppose Measure 97

What was the genesis of Measure 97? It’s a complicated story. In the 1990s, Oregon’s economy grew substantially thanks primarily to the tech sector. Unfortunately, one byproduct of the unprecedented growth were various decisions by our Public Employee Retirement System Board that resulted in overestimating the performance of our state employee retirement accounts (PERS). The cumulative impact of overestimating the returns on PERS investments resulted in unrealistic actuarial projections. Coupled with an aging population that is living longer, we now have a massive unfunded liability in the state budget. Currently estimated at $20 billion, any funding gap between the account balance and the performance of the investments must be paid by the taxpayers of Oregon. READ MORE »

Federal Appeals Court Halts Major Penalty in Referral Payment Case

On Oct. 11, the U.S. Court of Appeals vacated a $109 million penalty imposed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) against mortgage lender PHH Corporation for allegedly violating the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) by paying for referrals where there is federally related mortgage. The court held in favor of PHH, stating that payments for bona fide services provided and made at fair market value do not violate RESPA, reinforcing NAR’s support of marketing service agreements. As is, it’s a big, precedent-setting win for our industry, though CFPB is expected to appeal. READ MORE »

Properly functioning septic systems treat sewage to minimize groundwater and surface water pollution. In announcing the new partnership, DEQ Interim Director Pete Shepherd noted unanticipated costs to repair a failing septic system can be a huge financial burden. Wimmers, Starr Earn Top Statewide OAR Recognition

REALTOR Award Recipients

A pair of REALTORS® — one from The Dalles, the other from Eugene — have been named winners of the Oregon Association of REALTORS® top two statewide awards. Nan Wimmers, principal broker of Columbia Gorge Real Estate, is OAR’s 2016 REALTORS® of the Year, while Jeremy Starr is the recipient of OAR’s Distinguished Service Award. Starr is the broker/owner of John L. Scott Real Estate in Eugene.

“I am still in shock of being awarded this honor by my peers,” Wimmers said. “The REALTORS® that have won this award in previous years are people I have looked up to, so it’s a little overwhelming.” Wimmers has worked in real estate since the early 1990s. She and her sister have co-owned Columbia Gorge Real Estate since 2008. MORE ON WIMMERS »

Starr was named OAR’s REALTORS® of the Year in 2008. The OAR’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes Starr’s 30-plus years of leadership and volunteerism in both the real estate industry and his community. “This means a lot to me,” said Starr. “It’s a wonderful honor. I’ve always been surrounded by good people, and this is a reflection on them as well. MORE ON STARR »

It’s A Wrap!

2016 OAR Fall Convention

Over 300 Oregon REALTORS®, vendors, speakers, staff and others gathered at Sunriver the last week of September for the annual OAR Convention. While important OAR governance business was conducted in conjunction with the event, the main focus of the annual convention is for Oregon REALTORS® from every corner of the state to network, learn from one another and further promote professionalism in our industry. One great note to pass along: the dessert auction at the presidential installation dinner raised $7,100 for the HOME Foundation. When this year’s grants are awarded in December, we anticipate breaking the $1 million mark in contributions to promote affordable housing in Oregon! You’ll be hearing more about that for sure. In the meantime, check out convention photos on our Facebook page.

Flood Insurance Toolkit

Oregon’s fall rains have definitely started. Fortunately, we don’t usually have flood issues in the extreme that other parts of the country frequently do, but it does happen from time to time. That’s where our FLOOD INSURANCE TOOLKIT can come in handy. We have documents, links, videos and other resources to help you help your clients navigate the ever-changing world of flood insurance, including a variety of FEMA information. You can access the Flood Insurance Toolkit on the OAR website under Resources/Forms & PublicationS.

A special mention this month to the Willamette Valley Multiple Listing Service, who stepped up to the plate as an “Elite” sponsor of this year’s recently concluded OAR Convention in Sunriver. Attendees of our great convention will remember that they received an WVMLS lanyard with their delegate name badge at convention. It’s through the efforts of WVMLS and all of our other great sponsors throughout the year that we are able to put together first-class events like the Drive It HOME Golf Tournament, the Taste of Portland and the OAR Convention. Thank you to all of our sponsors for their continued generosity.
